Amy Walen (D) for State Senate
IN OLYMPIA, AMY WALEN STANDS OUT —
... AND STANDS UP.

Being a voice for commonsense isn’t easy in politics. Amy Walen doesn’t take the easy votes — she takes the right ones. She’s stood firm against extremists, pushed for fiscal responsibility, and fought for the Eastside even when it meant breaking from the crowd.
Standing Up to Right-Wing Extremism
While Trump and his allies target immigrant families, Amy fights back. She wrote and co-sponsored the Keep Washington Working Act (HB 1202) so DREAMers — young people who grew up here — can continue building lives and contributing to our communities without fear of deportation.
Amy has consistently defended women, workers, and vulnerable neighbors from right-wing attacks. She led the fight to end predatory "zombie debt" collection (HB 1531), championed gun shop security requirements (SB 2118) to prevent firearms from falling into dangerous hands, and redirected real estate taxes to affordable housing instead of developer profits (HB 1219).
For Amy, it's about protecting people and standing firm against those who try to divide our community.
Fighting for Affordable Living For Families
Amy doesn't rubber-stamp bad budgets. When the legislature passed a spending plan relying on the largest tax increase in state history, she voted no — warning that working Washington families would bear the burden when federal Trump-era cuts hit. (2025, SB 5167)
Her opponent, Vandana Slatter, voted yes for a budget that left taxpayers vulnerable. Amy pushed for a more responsible approach that protected essential services without overburdening working people.
Amy knows that progressive values require smart fiscal policy, not just bigger bills for families already struggling with costs.
Public Safety: Protection Before Politics
Amy believes real public safety means preventing gun violence, supporting effective law enforcement, AND protecting civil rights - not choosing sides in false debates.

She was the primary sponsor of legislation requiring gun shops to install security systems and maintain better records (SB 2118) - keeping firearms out of the wrong hands while respecting responsible gun owners. Gun safety groups like the Alliance for Gun Responsibility and Moms Demand Action recognize her leadership.

Amy also helped fix Washington's overly restrictive vehicle pursuit law (SB 5352) after listening to police chiefs, first responders, and community members about what actually keeps people safe. She doesn't reflexively choose ideology over evidence - she acts on what works.

For Amy, public safety means smart, evidence-based policy that protects everyone in our community.
